Wellness: Mental & Environmental Wellness

Do you feel overwhelmed daily? Your mind is cluttered with thousands of thoughts all at once and when you look around your house…more clutter. This immediately makes you freeze and instead of being productive in getting everything in order, it has the opposite effect – you rather just go and sit down or run away.

Do you feel overwhelmed daily? Your mind is cluttered with thousands of thoughts all at once and when you look around your house…more clutter. This immediately makes you freeze and instead of being productive in getting everything in order, it has the opposite effect – you rather just go and sit down or run away.

I have been going through this “overwhelming clutter cycle” since my first daughter was born & I’ve been spiraling ever since. Living with a cluttered mind and environment causes stress which affects your health negatively and mostly leads to emotional eating which puts more pressure on your health.

A study by the University of Connecticut found that by removing or controlling clutter, we can directly reduce the stress that stems from the mess which can help us to feel happier, less anxious, and more confident in ourselves.

WHAT IS AN EASY WAY TO START?

Ergonomics is “an applied science concerned with designing and arranging things people use so that the people and things interact most efficiently and safely;” defined by Merriam-Webster.

Decluttering… our homes, offices, our minds… can be difficult, because we don’t know where to start.

FOLLOW THESE FEW EASY POINTERS TO START:

  1. Decide what the function of each space in your house should be. Ergonomics teach us that we need to simplify the flow of our spaces. Example: If you know you comb your toddlers’ hair in front of the TV every day, ensure there is a little closed basket with hair products in the TV room.

  2. Pick the room/space that overwhelms you the most and start decluttering there.

  3. Take a box and a blackback and place it in the space you chose to start with.

  4. Take 10-15 min a day, work through the space, throw junk or items that are broken/unusable in the bag and place items to donate in the box. When it filled up, throw away the bag and drop the box off at a donate site.

  5. Then you take the next section.

  6. Important: CLEAR EVERYTHING OFF THE FRIDGE! And replace it with ONE family calendar.

  7. Sort paperwork/school letters etc immediately. Write dates on calendar, take photos of important info and throw paperwork away or file it.

  8. Take 20 min every evening to clear the kitchen and wipe the counter tops. Your day, the next morning, will start with a much calmer mind and heart.

  9. ASK FOR HELP. A family is a team!
